Escape and unwind at this secluded mountain getaway where your closest neighbors are wild turkeys and songbirds. This cabin, managed by our good friends Danny and Mary, is an outdoor lover’s dream come true. It has plenty of open yard space to enjoy family picnics, telling stories by the fire and experiencing the real Smoky Mountains (the property joins the National Park). Sit on the porch swing to drink your coffee or take a nature walk every morning on Starkeytown Road. It’s only a short, 15 minute drive to town if you can pull yourself away from the tranquility that abounds. Perfect for small family vacations, honeymooners, a girls’ gossip weekend or just to escape the demands of life.

You’ll stay in a much more modern cabin than what was once there. Our mother grew up with nine siblings in the original structure that was merely a shack with no running water or indoor plumbing. Elaine and I still remember walking to the spring and hauling back pails of crystal-clear, ice-cold spring water that would be heated to wash dishes. I vividly remember my aunts leaning over tubs to wash their hair, too. None of them ever thought of themselves as poor, and to this day I feel as if they’d go back to that simpler time in a heartbeat.

Our great grandmother on our mother’s side lived in a small cabin not far from The Wild Side rental. We call it the “Aunt Ellen place.” There’s barely anything left of that sweet little cabin now, but it’s rumored that they used the tiny little window to shoot at Indians back in the day.

Be sure to call Mary directly if you book this cabin to save money!
